Do Natural Breast Enhancement Pills Work?

Do natural breast enhancement pills work? The promise of a safe alternative to breast enhancement surgery made by advertisements for natural breast enlargement found in women's magazines, television and the internet, can be difficult to resist. This is rings true for women who feel insecure about their breasts – especially after childbirth, weight loss and the removal of breast implants.

However, many women are using these pills without realizing that there is little-to-no evidence about their safety. Most websites selling natural breast enhancement pills fail to adequately notify potential buyers of any associated risks.

Theoretically, natural breast enlargement pills could increase breast size as they contain herbal ingredients which are know to have estrogen-like effects on the body. It is the same way in which birth control pills are thought to temporarily increase breast size as increased estrogen results in fluid retention in the breasts and may have an effect on breast tissue.

However, this cannot divert from the fact that there is no evidence that natural breast enlargement pills are effective or that they are safe to use, especially in the long-term.

Firstly, if breast enlargement pills do indeed have estrogen-like effects on the body, this gives rise to some concerns. Administered on its own, estrogen stimulates the growth of uterine tissue and is believed to encourage abnormal tissue growth such as uterine cancer. This is the reason why birth control pills and hormone replacement therapy normally also contain progesterone to counter estrogen's effects on the uterus.

At this point, it is little known if natural brest enhancement pills acts to stimulate the growth of uterine tissue.

There is also little evidence on whether using natural breast enlargement pills will interfere with fertility, menstruation, or the effectiveness of birth control pills.

Some common ingredients found in natural breast enhancement pills are listed below, together with their associated benefits and risks:

Fennel Seed – For centuries, fennel has been used as both food and medicine. Traditionally, it was used to enhance libido, increase menstrual flow and increase the flow of breast milk in nursing women.

However, like most other natural breast enhancement pill ingredients listed here, there are no studies published which have examined the use of fennel seed for breast enhancement in humans, despite some interest in fennel in the development of synthetic estrogens in the 1930s, due to certain compounds in fennel called dianethole and photoanethole. A study found that female rats fed fennel seed showed an increase in the weight of breast tissue after ten days. Higher doses were found to increase the weight of the uterus, suggesting that fennel in high doses may stimulate the growth of uterine tissue.

Fennel may decrease the effectiveness of the antibiotic Cipro (ciprofloxacin) and possibly other drugs in the ciprofloxacin family. Thus, it should not be combined with these drugs.

Fenugreek – Despite claims that women in harems were traditionally fed fenugreek seeds to increase their breast size, so far no study has manage to substantiate this claim. Fenugreek contains a compound called diosgenin. In laboratories, diosgenin can be converted to estrogen and progesterone but it should be noted that the conversion does not take place naturally in the body.

Possible side effects from fenugreek taken via oral supplements may include diarrhea and gas. In large quantities, fenugreek may cause low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). It should not be combined with diabetes medication unless under a doctor's supervision. People who are allergic to peanuts or soybeans may also be allergic to fenugreek.

Dong Quai - Dong quai is a herb which the Chinese use to regulate menstrual cycles, reduce menstrual cramps, and relieve menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.

There is little evidence on this herb's efficacy as an agent for breast enhancement. The only published study on dong quai and breast enlargement was the reported case of a man who experienced temporary breast enlargement after taking a combination herbal pill. However, it was thought that the pill had been contaminated with synthetic estrogen. There are no other published clinical trials on dong quai for breast enhancement.

Using dong quai carries a number of potential risks. In laboratory studies, it has been discovered that the herb may stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells (estrogen receptor-positive and negative). Dong quai can also increase the sensitivity of skin to the sun's rays.

Dong quai is also not recommended for use by pregnant women nor for people taking blood-thinning drugs such as aspirin, Coumadin (warfarin), Plavix (clopidogrel), Ticlid (ticlopidine), Trental (pentoxifylline) as the herb contains chemicals called coumarins, which slow blood clotting. For this reason, dong quai should not be taken two weeks before or after surgery.

Blessed Thistle – Throughout history, blessed thistle has been used by nursing women to increase the flow of milk through their breasts. This herb has also been approved by Germany's Commission E for the treatment of loss of appetite and indigestion.

However, blessed thistle should be taken with caution. It is not recommended for pregnant women as it can increase the risk of birth defects and spontaneous abortion.

This herb is also believed to stimulate the production of stomach acid which may cause mild irritation of the digestive tract lining. It is not recommended for people with gastrointestinal reflux disease, ulcers, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and irritable bowel syndrome. People who are allergic to daisies, chrysanthemums, and ragweed may also show allergic reactions to blessed thistle, as they belong to the same plant family.
